A new species of Telmatobufo (Schmidt 1852) (Anura, Calyptocephalellidae) from a remnant of the Maulino Forest, central Chile Gayana
Cuevas,César C.
A new species, Telmatobufo ignotus, from the Reserva Nacional Los Queules, Cauquenes Province, central Chile is described herein. The new taxon is hypothesized based on a new combination of adult, larval, and chromosomal characters. The new species present the more septentrional distribution on the coastal range and a very restrictive distribution area compared to its congeners; because of this, taxonomic and conservation comments are discussed and advanced.

Restriction fragment analysis of the ribosomal DNA of Paratelmatobius and Scythrophrys species (Anura, Leptodactylidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Lourenço,Luciana B.; Garcia,Paulo C.A.; Recco-Pimentel,Shirlei M..
Physical maps of the ribosomal RNA gene 28S of species belonging to the genera Paratelmatobius and Scythrophrys were constructed, using five restriction endonucleases. The restriction sites for Bam HI, Bgl II, Bst EII, and Eco RI had similar positions in all species, although there were interspecific differences in the size of the restriction fragments obtained. An additional Pvu II site was found in Scythrophrys specimens from Piraquara (State of Paraná, Brazil) and from São Bento do Sul (State of Santa Catarina, Brazil), but not in the Scythrophrys specimens from Rancho Queimado (State of Santa Catarina, Brazil). This finding is in agreement with the hypothesis regarding the existence of two species in the genus Scythrophrys. On the other hand, the extra...

Whole-genome duplication and hemoglobin differentiation traits between allopatric populations of Brazilian Odontophrynus americanus species complex (Amphibia, Anura) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Cianciarullo,Aurora M.; Bonini-Domingos,Claudia R.; Vizotto,Luiz D.; Kobashi,Leonardo S.; Beçak,Maria-Luiza; Beçak,Willy.
Abstract Two allopatric populations of Brazilian diploid and tetraploid Odontophrynus americanus species complex, both from São Paulo state, had their blood hemoglobin biochemically analyzed. In addition, these specimens were cytogenetically characterized. Biochemical characterization of hemoglobin expression showed a distinct banding pattern between the allopatric specimens. Besides this, two distinct phenotypes, not linked to ploidy, sex, or age, were observed in adult animals of both populations. Phenotype A exhibits dark-colored body with small papillae, ogival-shaped jaw with reduced interpupillary distance and shorter hind limbs. Phenotype B shows yellowish-colored body with larger papillae, arch-shaped jaw with broader interpupillary distance and...

Cytogenetics of two hylid frogs from Brazilian Cerrado Genet. Mol. Biol.
Targueta,Cíntia Pelegrineti; Guerra,Vinícius; Gambale,Priscilla Guedes; Bastos,Rogério Pereira; Silva,Daniela de Melo e; Telles,Mariana Pires de Campos.
Abstract Cytogenetic data can be useful for taxonomic and phylogenetic studies, as well as to provide information about chromosome evolution. Therefore, it may help design conservation priorities for some threatened species, such as anurans. Herein, we describe the karyotypes of Scinax constrictus and Ololygon centralis, native endemic species from the Brazilian Cerrado. Chromosome preparations for both species were stained with Giemsa for morphological analyses and then impregnated by the Ag-NOR method for localization of the nucleolar organizer region (NOR). Both species had 24 chromosomes, as confirmed by meiotic analyses, which showed 12 bivalents. Chromosome morphologies presented the same pattern for Scinax and Ololygon compared to species already...

Hypothesis testing of genetic similarity based on RAPD data using Mantel tests and model matrices Genet. Mol. Biol.
Rodrigues,Flávia Melo; Diniz-Filho,José Alexandre Felizola; Bataus,Luiz Artur Mendes; Bastos,Rogério Pereira.
Clustering and ordination procedures in multivariate analyses have been widely used to describe patterns of genetic distances. However, in some cases, such as when dealing with Jaccard coefficients based on RAPD data, these techniques may fail to represent genetic distances because of the high dimensionality of the genetic distances caused by stochastic variation in DNA fragments among the units analyzed (species or populations). In this note, we show how Mantel tests can be used to test hypotheses about genetic distances and avoid problems with multivariate data representation. The procedure is illustrated with RAPD data comparing 20 anuran species from the cerrado, in which Jaccard genetic distances were compared to three model matrices linking the...

B-chromosomes in two Brazilian populations of Dendropsophus nanus (Anura, Hylidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Medeiros,Lilian R.; Rossa-Feres,Denise C.; Jim,Jorge; Recco-Pimentel,Shirlei M..
We report on the presence of B-chromosomes in two populations of Dendropsophus nanus (= Hyla nana Boulenger, 1889) from São Paulo State, Brazil. Such chromosomes were observed in 4 out of 43 specimens (9.3%) and in 9 out of 15 specimens (60%) from the municipalities of Nova Aliança and Botucatu, respectively. The karyotype 2n = 30 + 1B found in D. nanus was similar to that of other species with 2n = 30 chromosomes, except for the presence of an additional small telocentric chromosome. In one specimen from Botucatu, cells with one to three extra chromosomes were observed. These B-chromosomes appeared as univalent in meiosis I and did not bear a nucleolar organizer region or exhibit constitutive heterochromatin.

Vocalizações e interações acústicas em Hyla raniceps (Anura, Hylidae) durante a atividade reprodutiva Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Guimarães,Lorena dall'Ara; Bastos,Rogério P..
The vocalizations of H. raniceps (Cope, 1826) and their functions are described, including an analysis of the influence of temperature, weight, or SVL (snout-vent length) of males on the acoustic parameters. The vocalizations were recorded in three areas in Fazenda Lagoa Grande, Municipality of Pontalina, State of Goiás, central Brazil. Males began their vocalizations just before sunset, extending them, in some cases, to dawn of the following day. The peak of activities happened between 21h and 23h. The height of calling sites varied plenty, being the position horizontal in about 50% of them. Males defended sites in different areas during consecutive nights. Rain and strong winds interrupted the calling activities. Males emitted three vocalizations:...

Espermiogênese em Eupemphix nattereri (Anura, Leiuperidae): aspectos ultra-estruturais Iheringia, Sér. Zool.

Reproductive modes and fecundity of an assemblage of anuran amphibians in the Atlantic rainforest, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Hartmann,Marilia T; Hartmann,Paulo A; Haddad,Célio F. B.
Reproductive modes and size-fecundity relationships are described for anurans from Picinguaba, a region of Atlantic rainforest on the northern coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. We observed 13 reproductive modes, confirming a high diversity of modes in the Atlantic rainforest. This diversity of reproductive modes reflects the successful use of diversified and humid microhabitats by anurans in this biome. We measured the snout-vent length of 715 specimens of 40 species of anurans. The size-fecundity relationship of 12 species was analyzed. Female snout-vent lengths explained between 57% and 81% of clutch size variation. Anurans with aquatic modes laid more eggs than those with terrestrial or arboreal modes. Larger eggs were deposited by species with...

Resurrection of Hyla wavrini Parker (Amphibia: Anura: Hylidae), a gladiator frog from northern South America Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S..
During field work in Venezuela and Brazil a difference in call was noticed between specimens of large hylids of the Hyla boans-group. Based on this and on morphological differences, it was concluded that Hyla wavrini Parker, 1936, up till now considered a synonym of Hyla boans (Linnaeus, 1758), should be considered a valid species, of which Hyla miranda-ribeiri Melin, 1941 is a synonym.

Advertisement calls of Bolivian species of Scinax (Amphibia, Anura, Hylidae) Naturalis
Riva, Ignacio de la; Márquez, Rafael; Bosch, Jaime.
The advertisement calls of eight Bolivian species of Scinax are described including information on the calling behaviour of each species. A characteristic audiospectrogram and oscillogram are presented for each species, as well as numerical information about the spectral and temporal features of the calls. Two phenograms based on the characteristics of the mating calls are constructed, the first one using a traditional multivariate technique (UPGMA) and the second one using audiospectrogram correlation, a new technique that allows holistic comparisons of single vocalizations.

Natural history and conservation of the rediscovered Hula painted frog, Latonia nigriventer Naturalis
Bina Perl, R.G.; Gafny, S.; Malka, Y.; Renan, S.; Woodhams, D.C.; Rollins-Smith, L.; Pask, J.D.; Bletz, M.C.; Geffen, E.; Vences, M..
Dramatic global amphibian declines have recently led to an increased concern for many species of this animal class. The enigmatic Hula painted frog (Latonia nigriventer), the first amphibian to be declared extinct but unexpectedly rediscovered in 2011, has remained one of the rarest and most poorly understood amphibians worldwide. Gathering basic biological information on this species, along with an understanding of its disease-related threats remains fundamental for developing risk assessments and conservation strategies. Our surveys in recent years confirmed that L. nigriventer is a localised species with elusive habits. The species appears to follow an opportunistic breeding phenology and has a tadpole morphology similar to its well-studied sister group...

On The Identity Of Some Toads Of The Genus Bufo From Ecuador, With Additional Remarks On Andinophryne Colomai Hoogmoed, 1985 (Amphibia: Anura: Bufonidae). Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S..
Study of the type specimens of B. caeruleostictus Günther, 1859 and B. chanchanensis Fowler, 1913, and of fresh material showed that B. chanchanensis is a junior subjective synonym of B. caeruleostictus. Probably it is a member of the B. guttatus group. B. caeruleocellatus Fowler, 1913 is a junior subjective synonym of B. haematiticus Cope, 1862. New material of B. hypomelas Boulenger, 1913 is reported from NW Ecuador, the species is redescribed, and it is shown that this is a valid taxon, not the juvenile of B. blombergi Myers & Funkhouser, 1951 as suggested by Lynch, in Frost (1985). It is doubted whether B. intermedius Günther originates from Ecuador. It probably is a Central American or Mexican species of the B. valliceps Wiegmann, 1833 group. A...
